Just as the weather started to cool down in Maine second grade students became immersed in voraciously reading good-fit books during our literacy block. Students were in the beginning stages of preparing for our unit: Quilts for a Cause. Maine winters are always very cold and many students can relate to the feeling of going home and warming up next to the wood stove, turning up the furnace or curling up underneath a blanket. Students are able to express the comfort they find in staying warm during these cold months or how having a special stuffed animal or blanket can help them to relax or cheer them up after a bad day. They explored the feelings of others who may not be able to stay warm during the cold season or those who could be cheered up. Students will participated in a unit that incorporated both academics and empathy: Quilts for a Cause. Students helped to design quilts made from quilt squares they’ve created of their favorite characters and settings from their list of good-fit books they’ve read during the school year. These quilts will be donated to local charities that the students have identified as worthy causes. During this unit students needed to incorporate the knowledge and skills they’ve learned about measurement and data and apply it to designing quilts. Students worked together to problem solve with hands on materials. Along the way, they documented their teamwork, design process and problem solving skills with technology. At the end of the unit students identified the following charities to donate their quilts to: the local animal shelters, the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. What a great way to celebrate our learning by giving a gift to others in need. I’m so proud of you second graders!
